The Bible and Healing Today
There are many passages that could be used to show how healing was central to Jesus ministry and how it has been passed on to his followers. This is a small selection:
Jesus himself said:
‘The Enemy comes to kill, steal and destroy, but I have come that you might have life, life in all its fullness.’ John 10:10
Many who were demon-possessed were brought to [Jesus] and he drove out the spirits with a word and healed all who were ill. Matthew 8: 16
The apostle Peter visited a group of believers in the gentile town of Caesarea, and described to them Jesus' ministry whilst he was on Earth:
'You know...how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and how he went around doing good and healing all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with him.' Acts 10:38
Jesus gave his disciples the authority to do what he did...
He called his twelve disciples to him and gave them authority to drive out evil spirits and to heal every disease and sickness. Matthew 10: 1
In his gospel, Mark comments:
And these signs will accompany those who believe ……they will place their hands on sick people and they will recover. Mark 16: 17-18
Isaiah describes how Jesus' death is central; it changes everything...
He [Jesus] was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows, and familiar with suffering. Like one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not. Surely he took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows, yet we considered him stricken by God, smitten by him, and afflicted. But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed. Isaiah 53: 4,5
This is echoed in the psalmist's words:
Praise the Lord, O my soul
and forget not all His benefits,
Who forgives all your sins
and heals all your diseases;
Who redeems your life from the pit
and crowns you with love and compassion,
Who satisfies your desires with good things
so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s Psalm 103:2
Has Jesus and his intentions changed since Bible times?
Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever. Hebrews 13: 8
Can I trust the Bible*?
God’s Word is eternal; it stands firm in the heavens. Psalm 119:89
The Word will accomplish that for which He sends it. Isaiah 55:11
God’s Word is living and active. Hebrews 4:12
No word God speaks lacks power. Luke 1:37
